Six keys — five rooms and one two-bedroom apartment with a living room — above the cellar of a working winery at Cais do Mourato, Bandeiras, in Madalena. Two nights minimum. It is the other Pico entry on this list and it is not the same idea: this one puts you inside one working building at Bandeiras, in Madalena, while Adegas do Pico gives you a separate cottage at Prainha, on the north coast. Choose by whether you want a door of your own or a cellar under the floor.

Wine estates are unusually good at producing places to sleep and unusually bad
at producing houses. A working quinta has land, old buildings and a reason for
strangers to visit, and the easy answer is a hotel with a cellar door attached.
The seven here are the other thing: buildings you stay in rather than book a
room inside.
They divide cleanly by how much of the place is yours. Casa Villae 1255
is one house of eight rooms handed to a single group — nineteen beds, and no
strangers. Adegas do Pico gives you a stone cottage with its own door. At the
other end, Quinta da Pacheca’s barrel suites stand alone in the vineyard but
share an estate with a manor hotel, a spa and a restaurant, and Quinta Nova and
Casa do Rio are small wine houses of eleven and ten rooms where you will see
other guests at breakfast.
Five of the seven were standing before anyone thought of putting guests in them:
the medieval house in the Dão, the manor beside Quinta Nova’s 1764 winery, the
Galician manor the González Vázquez family rebuilt from ruins at Ribadavia, the
fishermen’s stone wine cottages at Prainha and the courtyard building above the
cellar at Bandeiras. Two were built for the job — Casa do Rio’s timber box over
the orange grove at Foz Côa, and Quinta da Pacheca’s ten barrels standing free
in the vineyard at Cambres.
The two Azorean entries need separating, because in a list they look like the
same stay twice. They are not. One is a cottage on Pico’s north coast at
Prainha; the other is six keys above a working cellar at Bandeiras.
