7 Watermill Stays in Portugal, Galicia and the Azores We'd Actually Travel For

Basotxerri, CC BY-SA 4.0 via Wikimedia Commons

By Nick Biggs · 26 August 2026

Seven converted watermills across mainland Portugal, Galicia and the Azores. They range from a single apartment for two to a site of four houses sleeping twenty, so the counts are in every entry rather than left for you to discover on the booking page.

Names and reasons come first here. Where a property's own Instagram post can stand in, it loads only when you ask for it; otherwise an entry stays in words until the owner has told us we may publish a picture of their house.

01

Moinho de Estorãos

North, Mainland Portugal

This is the house that is an 18th-century granite watermill beside the old bridge on the Estorãos, its water wheel and grindstone still in place, let whole to two people.

The building

Size
One apartment for two, let whole
The tradeoff
Managed and let through a network page, not its own site
Checked
August 2026, against the listing it is let through

One apartment for two, let whole — an eighteenth-century granite mill restored with the original water wheel and grindstone kept, plus a fireplace, a kitchenette and a wood oven. It stands beside the bridge over the Estorãos, about six kilometres from Ponte de Lima. The link goes to the Solares de Portugal network page rather than to a site of the mill's own, because that is how it is managed and let.

02

Historic Riverfront Watermill

North, Mainland Portugal

This is the house that is a Coura watermill of three to four hundred years with its own private river beach, its three lofts named for Dylan, Cocker and U2 after the festival across the water.

The building
A mill of three to four hundred years, split into four stone houses
Size
Four houses, eight bedrooms, up to twenty guests
Shared space
A private river beach only this property can reach
The tradeoff
It faces the Vilar de Mouros festival grounds
Checked

A three-to-four-hundred-year-old mill that the owning family has been restoring since 2009 into four independent stone houses: Casa Principal for up to ten, the Bob Dylan and Joe Cocker houses for four each, and the U2 Loft for two. Eight bedrooms and 459 square metres across the site, up to twenty guests if you take the lot, and the units also let individually. The private beach on the Coura is the one the property has the only access to. It faces the Vilar de Mouros festival grounds, near Caminha.

This is the house that is a century-old watermill on the Anços with its stone, timber and original milling structure kept in place, a river-fed natural pool, and five rooms named after the grains it once ground.

The building

Size
Five rooms, each for two
Shared space
A shared riverside lounge and ground-floor kitchen-dining room
The tradeoff
The one on the list where you share the building

Five rooms, each for two, named Centeio, Milho, Arroz, Cevada and Trigo — so this is the one on the list where you share the building. Owner-run, with a river-fed natural pool, a kitchen garden, a shared riverside lounge and a kitchen-dining room on the ground floor of the mill itself. It is at Redinha, in Pombal, beside the Anços.

Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, let whole
The tradeoff
Let whole and exclusively, and only that way

Two independent bedrooms, two bathrooms, one combined kitchen and living room, terraces, and no other party on the property — it is let whole and exclusively, and only that way. The stream of small waterfalls it sits on runs down into the Zêzere. Bairradas, in Figueiró dos Vinhos.

This is the house that is a watermill at the western edge of Europe, a waterfall at its back and Ilhéu do Monchique in front, on Flores.

The building
A watermill with a waterfall at its back
Size
One house for up to six
The tradeoff
Belongs to a small family group of houses in the same village
Checked
August 2026, against the property's own pages

One house for up to six, let exclusively: a queen bedroom, a second floor with a queen and two singles, one bathroom, a full kitchen, a garden and a barbecue. It belongs to a small family group of houses in the same village, each of which lets whole, so the mill is a house rather than a room in something larger. Fajã Grande, on Flores — three minutes' walk from the beach and two hundred metres from the Poço do Bacalhau waterfall.

06

Ribeira do Montestal Watermill

Bragança, Mainland Portugal

This is the house that is a watermill on a Trás-os-Montes stream, with a treehouse for two standing in the trees outside it.

The building
A watermill with a treehouse standing outside it
Size
Four in the mill, two in the treehouse
Shared space
The treehouse pair use the mill's bathroom
The tradeoff
The treehouse has no bathroom of its own
Checked
August 2026, against the listing it is let through

The mill is an entire home — two bedrooms, one bathroom, four guests — and the treehouse outside sleeps two more, with the catch that it has no bathroom of its own and those two walk the ten metres back to the mill's. Taken together that is a six-person stay in two buildings. It is at Soutelo Mourisco, in Macedo de Cavaleiros. The mill has no page of its own, so the link goes to the listing it is let through.

This is the house that is an old Galician muíño standing alone on the Arnego, forty kilometres upriver of Santiago.

Size
One mill let entire, one bedroom
The tradeoff
One bedroom, alone on its stretch of the river

One old mill let entire: a bedroom, a living room, a full kitchen, a bathroom, a garden and a terrace over the water. It stands alone inside the protected stretch of the Arnego, at Toiriz in Vila de Cruces, about forty kilometres from Santiago. Like the Trás-os-Montes mill, it has no site of its own, so the link is the listing rather than the owner's page.

A converted watermill is one of the few building types where you can tell straight away how seriously the conversion was taken, because either the machinery is still there or it is not. At Moinho de Estorãos the water wheel and the grindstone were kept in place. At Moinho Real the stone, the timber and the original milling structure stayed. That is a different proposition from a house that is called a mill.

The seven are not the same size as each other, and that is the main thing to sort out before booking. Estorãos is one apartment for two. Sozen Mill and O Muíño da Balsiña are single houses let whole. Moinho da Cascata takes six. The Montestal mill takes four in the mill and two more in a treehouse that shares the mill’s bathroom. Moinho Real is five rooms, so you will meet other guests at breakfast. And the Coura mill at Vilar de Mouros is four separate stone houses, twenty guests if you take all of it, with a river beach only that property can reach.

The water is worth naming, because it is what you are actually next to: the Estorãos above Ponte de Lima, the Coura at Vilar de Mouros, the Anços at Redinha, the Ribeira do Montestal at Soutelo Mourisco, the stream of small waterfalls that drops into the Zêzere at Bairradas, and the Arnego, forty kilometres upriver of Santiago inside its protected stretch. On Flores there is no river at all — a waterfall at the mill’s back, and Ilhéu do Monchique out in front.

Four of the seven have no site of their own, so their links go to the page they are let through instead. We would rather send you to a page the owner controls, and where that page does not exist, the entry says so.

None of the seven is featured here. Every link goes to the property’s own page, or, where there is none, to the listing it is let through.
