Quinta da Pacheca Wine Barrels

Douro, Mainland Portugal

This is the house with ten free-standing suites built as giant wine barrels in a Douro vineyard.

Ten barrels standing free in the vineyard at Cambres, near Lamego, each of them a structure of its own — but they share the estate with the manor hotel, a spa and a restaurant, so what you get is a building nobody else is in rather than a valley to yourself.

Casa do Rio Wine Hotel by Vallado

Douro Superior, Mainland Portugal

This is the house with a timber box hovering over an orange grove above the Douro, and three vineyard suites with their own pools.

Ten rooms on the Vallado estate at Foz Côa, between the vines and the river, small enough that the building still reads as a house rather than a corridor — though three of the rooms have pools of their own and the rest do not.

Quinta Nova Winery House

Douro, Mainland Portugal

This is the house with a pool perched on an 18th-century schist terrace above 1.5 km of private Douro riverfront.

Eleven rooms beside the estate's original winery of 1764, on schist terraces at Covas do Douro in Sabrosa, with a kilometre and a half of private riverfront below — the part you cannot get from a hotel in town.

When to go

September is the valley at its most worked, when the harvest is on and the estates are busy, and it is also when rooms are hardest to come by. Summer here is properly hot: the schist terraces hold the heat and the river does not do much about it, so shade and water matter more than they would further north. Spring is green and quiet, and late autumn turns the terraces over before the vines go bare. Winter is the cold, empty version, and the light on the water is worth the fire indoors.

Getting there

Porto is the arrival, and the valley starts about an hour inland of it. The railway is the part most people remember afterwards, because the line runs along the water for the last stretch up the valley, but a car is what makes the estates reachable — they sit above the road on terraces rather than beside it. The upper valley, out towards Foz Côa, is another hour on again and noticeably emptier.

Estate or town

The choice in the Douro is between a town and an estate. Peso da Régua and Pinhão put you within walking distance of a station and somewhere to eat; a quinta puts you inside the vineyard, with the terraces dropping to the water and a drive between you and dinner. Everything on this page is the second kind, which is the reason to come and also the harder option. If nobody in the party wants to drive after dinner, read the distances before you commit.
