Ten domes with transparent panels, sold as Sun Bubble and Moon Bubble, 36 square metres each, two people to a dome, with a private en-suite bathroom and shower. Breakfast is included and served as a buffet, there is a pool with a 110-square-metre dome beside it, the site is adults-only and the minimum stay is two nights. The Dark Sky Alqueva name attached to it is a dark-sky programme rather than an address: the domes stand at Veiros, in Estremoz, ten minutes from the town, forty-five minutes from Évora and under two hours from Lisbon.

The only entry here where the building came first and the bubble was added to it. The property is a restored watermill on the Ribeira da Bazágueda at Aranhas, about eight kilometres from Penamacor and on the edge of the Serra da Malcata nature reserve, with three rooms across three schist houses, a saltwater pool and a garden. The bubble arrived in 2016 and sits almost over the river. It is owner-run by Anabela and Rui, which is also why there is only one of them.

Five domes in two grades at Caminho do Jardim Pelado, Prazeres, in the Calheta municipality on Madeira's south-west coast. Each has a full kitchen with utensils, a bathroom and private shower, a private balcony with a mountain and sea view, and a jacuzzi available at any time; the wood-burning fireplace, the esplanade table and the sunbeds come with the Luxury domes rather than the Standard ones. The units are also sold individually on listing platforms. This is the one on the list where the Atlantic, not the sky, is what you are looking at.

Seven bubbles at the Oleiros site — Perseus, Orion, Antares and Aquarius in the Gran grade, Andromeda, Pegasus and Cassiopeia in the Deluxe. All of them take two adults and include a full bathroom, air conditioning and a telescope; the Gran bubbles have a round bath at the foot of the bed and the Deluxe ones an elongated bath in an annexe. Some look at the sea and some at fields. The site carries a Starlight campground certification and the operator describes the bubbles as astronomical observatories. The same company runs a second bubble site at Sanxenxo, in a vineyard, so it is worth checking which one you are booking.

Three bubbles — Luscofusco and Luar as suites, Alborada as the premium one — at Lugar de Prada 6, Xove, on the A Mariña coast in Lugo. Each has a king bed with a canopy, an outdoor hot tub, a private bathroom, a minibar and a telescope, and the site is adults-only. It opened in October 2022 and is bookable directly. The operators' own claim for the place is the absence of light pollution on that stretch of coast, and they brand it Luzada Skylight Bubbles.

A dome is a bought object. The same shell can be pitched in a field in Lugo or
on a hillside in Madeira, so the questions worth asking about this kind of stay
are not about the dome. They are about the ground it stands on, how many of them
are on that ground, and what actually happens after dark.
The six here answer that differently. At Glamping Skies the sky is the whole
proposition: ten domes with transparent panels, 36 square metres each, and a
bed you look up from. The Dark Sky Alqueva name attached to the place is a
dark-sky programme rather than an address — the domes are at Veiros, ten minutes
from Estremoz. Albarari’s Oleiros bubbles carry a Starlight campground
certification and come with a telescope apiece, as do Luzada’s three on the A
Mariña coast, where the operators’ case for the site is the lack of light
pollution. Remanso de Trasfontao keeps a telescope with the Burbuja Carballo and
sells the Nido 360º next to it on its view of the sky.
Counts matter more here than in most categories, because a transparent shell
among forty others is a campsite. These run from one to ten. Moinho do Maneio
has exactly one bubble, added in 2016 to a restored watermill on the Bazágueda
with three schist-house rooms and a saltwater pool — the only entry where the
building came first. Luzada has three, all adults-only. Soul Glamping has five,
in two grades. Trasfontao has five units, of which one is the bubble and one a
treetop nest. Albarari’s Oleiros site has seven, four Gran and three Deluxe.
Glamping Skies has ten, and with them a buffet breakfast, a two-night minimum
and an adults-only rule.
What a night in one is like depends on what the operator has fitted. The
Albarari bubbles have a full bathroom, air conditioning and a bath — round at
the foot of the bed in the Gran grade, in an annexe in the Deluxe. Luzada has a
canopy bed and a hot tub outside. Soul Glamping gives each dome a full kitchen
and a private balcony, which means nobody has to appear at breakfast, though the
fireplace and the sunbeds belong to the Luxury grade only. And at Soul Glamping
the thing you are actually looking at is the Atlantic rather than the stars,
which is a different holiday from the Alentejo plain.
