Madeira produces two kinds of stay in large numbers: a hotel above Funchal, and
a small wooden thing with a view. What is harder to find, and what this list is,
is a building that was already doing something else — farming a cliff, storing
straw, housing a cow, making wine — and now takes guests. These six are that.
The three at the top of the list are all working land. Fajã dos Padres is a farm
of vines, bananas and mangoes at the bottom of a cliff, reachable by cable car or
by boat and by nothing else. Casas da Levada is six old farm buildings on an
organic quinta at the island’s western tip, ranging from thirty square metres to
two hundred and twenty. Socalco Nature is ten buildings on Calheta’s terraces,
one of them a cave.
The names on this island usually tell you what the building was, which is worth
reading before you book. Casa da Gruta at Socalco is the cave and Casa da Palha
the old straw store. At Casas da Levada it is the cow house, the shepherd’s
house and the spring house, thirty square metres at one end and two hundred and
twenty at the other. At Fajã dos Padres the eight cottages carry the names of
people who worked the farm — José Soldado, Julia, Seifia, Tia Maria — alongside
the Boat House and the Vine House.
The last three are lighter buildings. Escarpa and Mountain Eco Shelters do not
publish how many units they have. Canto das Fontes is four canvas units around a
waterfall and does not publish an address at all.
